Teaching Writing
Again, I'm sorry for the late posting of this topic.
The last students’ presentation was the presentation about how to teach writing. I expected that the last presentation would be the best one because the presenters had learned from the previous presentations. I was a bit disappointed because they still made the same mistakes in giving instruction, which was still unclear; distributing tasks among presenters, which was still confusing of who did what, and so on.
The presenters presented how to teach writing in different ways. Besides, the presenters chose different kinds of text. There was a narrative, descriptive and procedure text. For the narrative and descriptive texts, the presenters brought with them pictures, but the procedure text was accompanied by real cheese omelet…
The following is the additional material about how to teach writing from Jeremy Harmer and Adrian Doff.
Controlled writing:
• Leave out part of the sentence for the students to write themselves
• Say the sentence, but write only the outline on the board
• Draw a picture to replace part of the sentence
• Write the sentence on the board, and ask students to write a similar true sentence about themselves
Controlled writing activities:
• Gap filling
Example:
Listen to the teacher, then write out the complete sentence
Paper …………… wood. It ………… the Chinese in …………….
• Re-ordering
Example:
Write the sentences correctly
• We/six o’clock/and/tea/drink/get up/at
• Then/the patients/wake/go/and/the wards/we/round
• Sometimes/medicines/injections/them/we/or/give
• Substitution
Example:
Write a true sentence like this about yourself
• Andy enjoys playing football and reading adventure stories
• Correct the facts
Example:
Rewrite the sentences so that they match the picture
• At the hospital, I saw the patient is sitting on his bed. He was wearing red polka dot pajamas. He looked very sad.
(draw a picture which is different from the description)

I think teaching writing is difficult enough because we have to invite the students' interesting to write, meanwhile the students sometimes don't like writing activities. So, how to encourage the students' interesting to write? Then, how about the standardization to evaluate the students' ability in writing?

So after I saw the last group performed and read the note in your blog, I could get new knowledges such as gap filling, re-ordering sentence from jumble words. I Think the method from the last group by using their picture was very useful for us.so, Most of all students interested in writing subject.

Hi, Mrs. Atti...I'd like to give a short comment on teaching writing. Well, I have to agree with the other commenter that teaching writing is not as easy as we think it is,, well, maybe the difficulty in teaching writing is preparation before teaching, especially in preparing the materials and activities which might interest the students with the subject. Most of the presenters might perhaps have a difficulty in considering the materials and activities which might be due to the fact that they have the slightest clue on how to teach writing interestingly, especially since they were facing students whose first language is not English . This is because when they learnt writing themselves, they seldom experienced being taught writing interestingly, especially being taught writing with games or lets just say hardly ever experienced a fun writing lessons. So, I guess that's why most of the presenters couldn't think of any interesting ways of teaching writing...and the students didn't help either because most of them think that writing is just about writing...But after that lesson I learnt that teaching writing could be fun and that there are many ways in teaching writing.

Dear Mrs. Atti...I would like to comment a little about the group who presented teaching writing in my class. Well, I would like to say that they were quite good. Well, Kiki was good when she explained the material, Anggi was also helpful as the co-teacher. their material was good and so was the game,,but their game was like a chain writing, it would have been better and more interesting if the material was about narrative text,then the students could have made a narrative story from the game. That way, for starters, the teacher could have written a sentence on the board as a opening, for example; Once upon a time...then every students should continue the story by writing a sentence each one after the other. I'm sure that way, the students will have a much fun writing class. That would stimulate the students creativity in writing. But, still that group did well in teaching writing.

good afternoon, I want to give comment about teaching writing. actually my group had given the material of teaching writing. I do agree that teaching writing is not as easy as teaching another part of language, especially for Indonesian students. because they do not used to speak or write in English. I also find that they have difficulties on writing in a good structure, because there are many differences between Indonesian sentence structure and English sentence structure, so to make the students comprehend in writing in English, I think it would be useful if we introduce them the sentence structure, we can also give them example of many kinds of text and asked them to read more because I think there are a correlation between writing and reading, because through reading the students can learn how to construct a good sentence. i think that's all, thank you.

Mam, I would like to give respond about teaching writing. when I was Junior and high school I didn't get writing class in my schedule. I got it when I entered this faculty. at the first time, It is quite difficult to me because I don't know how to construct the words in good sentences. it is such bored activity at the beginning but I realized that I have to master it. if I am not master it how could I teach my students then. when I read your blog I got little bit material about how to teach writing. well, when we want to start writing there are some aspects that we've to master it too, vocabulary and grammar but it is hard to combine those things become good paragraph. but in practicing it everyday, I believed that we could master it well. when we teach writing class, we can use some strategies to make the students interesting in it, just like the example, the students can write anything about himself or something and then his writing paper can be analyzed by the other students. So, the students can analze it.

I think teaching writing is one of the most dificult subjects, because we also have to master the structure, grammar, and the spelling of the words in order to make a good writing. And of course, if we want to teach writing we have to master it first. Beside that, so many students thinks that writing subject is a bore subject. So that, it is not easy to encourage the student to like and comprehend the writing subject. But after I read your note I found so many new method in teaching writing like using gap filling, re-ordering, subtitution, etc. and I think that methodology can make the student more interest in writing subject. I think that's all of my oppinion. thanks for your note, it is very useful for me.

After I read your blogg I got many ideas to teach writing. There are many activities that we can use in writing class to make it interesting. Usually writing class makes the students are boring because they were ordered to compose a paragraph. I also have the same experience even though I like writing but sometimes I have no idea to make a story in a short time and I feel boring because of the same activities that I do. I think that these explanations are very helpful and applicable in preparing us before have PPL. In my opinion these methods also help us to make writing class is not a burden for students because usually students have difficulties in making a paragraph but through these exercises they practice in making writing without burden.

Hello mam, I want to respond pupun’s comment. I think it's not too difficult to encourage the students' interesting to write. The teacher here should be creative creating the interesting creativity relates to the writing skill. It reminds me when I was a member of TESOL. Ms Walker asked students to read the Indonesian text given, and then write the summery of the text in English. I think it’s interesting for me.
I’m sure that there are some students in classroom who feel bored to write. So we have to be happy in teaching because it can motivate students to study. We can apply our interesting experience that we have gotten before. Positive thinking is the most important. Never think that we can’t encourage our students to write because we’re what we are thinking, and try it is the better one.

I love writing, because writing can makes me better feeling. We can express our feeling by written, right?... I think that writing can increase our creativity and our memory.
Ma’am I had read about writing from Quantum Learning’s book, from that I knew that writing is all of brain activities that uses right brain (emotional) and left brain (logic). There are two methods to open our creativities in order to be a faster writer. The first method is clustering. It is one way to choose opinions and write down in a paper quickly without doubtful and judgment. It is very useful to make us to work naturally with opinion without judgment. The last method is fast writing. The purpose of fast writing is to overcome the blank sheet of paper problems, in addition fast writing can give the real progress and direct. Ma’am I want to ask you, as a teacher, how to make the children interest in writing?... I hope you will give me some techniques to make the children interest in writing.

I want to give my comment about teaching writing.I agree with some friends who said that teaching writing is not easy. Actually, writing is hard job for me especially make a good paragraph. Because I have to pay attention to structure, grammar, vocabulary and diction. but i want to ask you,for what age the writing lesson will be given. As i know that writing begins to teach for children at ten years old. And now i'll try to answer your question.in my opinion to make children interest in writing you just give them an interested topic and you also can add with some interesting pictures orderly. That's my opinion,,you can apply it when you teach writing..

Dear Mrs. Atti, I agree with Tyo that the way to make teaching writing interesting is by giving pictures and interesting topics. Pictures will help students to come with ideas of what to write. Brainstorming about the topic that they will write would also be helpful. It'll help the students who are probably not in the mood to write or are not really good at writing ideas through writing. It's not that they are not good in writing, but it's just that sometimes students have no clue or ideas about what they will write but they are forced to write. It's just like reading; everyone can read and understand what they read when they want to...and so is writing.

My name is Indri Gunawan from 6C. I think there are some aspects that have to be considered by the teachers before teaching Writing. Teaching Writing is not as simple as teaching vocabulary and Structure, because it requires the students has got some skills like knowing the meaning of some words that relate with the Writing material, and structuring the sentence appropriately. So it is teachers’ jobs to make their students are correct in vocabulary and structuring sentences. For example, if we want to make a narrative paragraph we need to be good in Past Tense. So now we know how important the steps of teaching, right?
Based on my experience when I was a high school student, my teacher was teaching Writing with Gap Filling activity, but only some students that could answer the question. And now after I read the Writing material in your blog I realize that my teacher forgot something, she did not provide vocabularies that related with the material. Thank for the material…..

Mrs. atti.. i want to respond about Annisa's comment. i agree with annisa's comment about teaching writing is not easy may be because preparation before teaching is not good..i think before teach, teacher must find interesting material or theme so that students can interest to writing. the problem is find interesting material or theme is difficult things.. i think to solve this problem teacher must have more knowledge and know about hot issue so that it can become material when they teaching writing.for example, teacher can use headline in newspaper to become material or theme in teaching writing...that's all...thanks

now I'd like to give comment about Writing. based on my experience, Writing is something difficult, because in writing something we have to consider about the other things, like vocabulary and sentence structure. if we can fulfil those aspects, it means that we can write correctly. by the way about students presenting Writing material in my class, there are two groups actually. the first group is my senior; they looked not good in preparation I think, because they couldn't manage the time well, it proofed when they couldn't finish all activities. and about the second group I think they were good, although there were some mistakes, I appreciate with their creativity in teaching Writing. so the conclusion is in teaching Writing we have to have well preparation because Writing isn't as easy as the other courses

Beside for getting the sticker, i want to tell you about my experiences in writing class. i always feel that i able to write because i usually write my daily activity in my diary but when i practiced it in the real writing, it was very hard and i realized that having spirit only is not enough to do something! we have to learn more about what we want to do! so i think teaching writing as difficult as teaching reading as i told you in other comment. i have to be good writing teacher with my spirit modality! hehehehe...

Hi Ms... How’re you? Today I invite your blog again. Nice to see your condition is better than the day before. Now I see you're teaching in room 2.1. I want to say sorry for my presentation last tree weeks. I realize that the presentation of my group was poor because of the lack of preparation. i know that preparation is most important before present it. Mam, i have the same opinion with the other that it's not easy to prepare the material before teach it, especially for the lesson plan. I was confused which I can teach appropriate to the material given or not. Lesson plan is the first step should I make before teach. So, how many task that can be given to the students for teaching reading in one meeting (80 minutes)? it's important for me because I’m going to be a teacher. I’m afraid if I can't explain the material based on the lesson plan that I have made.

I want to give comment about teaching writing. When my friends present about writing, I think it's very interesting. The first, the teacher give the students exercise. Second, the teacher asks the students to make summary. The last, the teacher ask the students to write summary in white board. I think in the last session will be better if the teacher ask the students to read summary in front
of the class. Because if one by one the students write the summary in white board I think the time is not enough and it can cause teaching learning process not effective. I think the important is they write summary in note book then read the summary in front of the class without write in white board.

I think teaching writing is a hard job to do because a teacher must mastery the grammar and structure well. In writing, if we write a sentence without a good structure and grammar it would be totally wrong. So we must write a sentence in perfect structure and grammar. By the way, I want to give comment for the presenters. I think their performance is good enough and the material is interesting. they used pictures of famous actor and actress and the students describe that pictures. I think that was a good way to make students interested in learning writing.

It's mean that not only writing that difficult for but also grammar and structure. And you also said that writing subject was bored. I've suggestion for you!!actually,There's no something easy to do if you don't like it or you don't want to do it. I think teaching writing is very interesting although it's difficult for me. But if we always try to make a paragraph, I think we can do it. In writing we can also study about grammar and structure. Sometime I want to write the story (about my life or about my friends) in my diary, but when I can't find some difficulties words so I become lazy to continue my story.

I want to give a comment about teaching writing. I think teaching writing is more difficult than teaching vocabulary. Basically, I have same opinion about teaching writing with other students. The key point is " Teaching writing is quite difficult"
The things that make teaching writing difficult is the difficulties in make the student's mind become more imaginative. the teacher has to make the student's mind more colorful because if their mind have been fulled with imaginative thinking, they will easily write what they are thinking in their mind that time. So, the teachers should have a good technique to make their students' mind more colorful and imaginative.
Then, actually, I agree with the technique that have been done by the group that present about teaching writing. They use famous people's picture as a visual aids . But, in my opinion, if they make the picture more interesting it will be good. For example they mixed the picture between famous person with cartoon or caricature. I believe the students will be more interested.

I want to give some comment for vina. I have same problem with you I don't like writing. But if we always try to make a paragraph I think we can enjoy with this subject. Because in writing, we can also study about structure and grammar. When I write something I always find the difficulties words and sometime I can't find this words in the dictionary. But sometime I anxious and I try to find this words. And I think we can do it.

Assalamu’alaikum. Good afternoon Mam. I want to give a short comment about Reading. When I joined the Faculty of Teachers Training and Educational Sciences and knew there is a Reading subject, I thought Reading is easy to do and I just have to read English text with the correct pronunciation and it makes me bored because of the boring and monotone method but when I learn more about it, I just realized that it learns about kinds of texts, questions, parts of text and many more that makes me so confused. Honestly, I still have difficulties to learn the reading texts for detail but I’m happy because I know more about Reading.

I think writing is the difficulties lesson, because beside needs our imagination, we must great in grammar especially structure, because it can influence our plot in making story,I realizes that writing is important for us, and in teaching writing almost same with speaking,listening and reading, because in their lesson,there is making summary based on the dialogs/discussion,cassette/teacher,and and text which given by the teacher, and all of them needs our ability in English lesson,needs our concentration,and needs lot of time .

i'm sorry i was wrong to put comment for Reading into writing box. it should be put in Reading box so here is the writing comment.
Honestly, I feel little bit confused what I suppose to do to make Writing more interest when I have to teach English especially for Writing so it will make the students easier and interested to learn it and also doesn’t make them bored. Based on my experience during join Writing class, I feel very bored of the technique because the lecturer always asks the students to make a short story every meeting and explain the material without using the interesting technique or doing game and etc. but after my friends’ presentation, it little bit motivates me to make it fun when I should be a teacher later on.

I'd like to respond icha's comment,before I would like to say thank you, you said that our material was good. and then I agree with your suggestion that our material be better like a narrative text because our material like a chain writing. I think it is a good idea because if the students gave their writing and then other students continue the writing, it is more suitable if the material is a story. so it can be a chain story...thank you icha for your suggestion, may be your suggestion will be inspiration for us if teaching writing. I 'd like to give comment.honestly....I think teaching writing is not easy to do and I think teaching writing is more difficult than teaching vocabulary. Basically, I have same opinion or suggestion that when we are teaching writing we can use famous picture or interesting places,because if we ask the student to write difficult thing or dislike by them, automatically it can't increase their imaginative and creative.as we know, that some of students some times don't like writing activities,because they feel bore about it and the students think that writing just write.

I would like to respond Hadijah’s comment. I agree that her group didn’t have good preparation before teaching in the classroom (because I saw her presentation). But don’t be disappointed because you can learn from your old mistakes to make it better in the future. If she asked how many tasks that can be given to the students for teaching reading (or writing?) in one meeting (80 minutes). I think it depends on the material (long or short) and the explanation that you want to explain to your students , if one activity spend a lot of time to solve the problem maybe you just need to give one task. And if the activities is not too complicated and don’t need a lot of explanation, you may give your student three or four task in one meeting. So, how many tasks that you want to give to students in one meeting depends on the teaching material.

Through writing we also can share our emotion and our experiences. But for me, writing is not easy especially when I must write something, for example story in English. Hello mom, I’m Iyan. I want give a comment. I think the last group will give good presentation, but, it is in the contrary. They could not manage their group because the presentation dominated by one person. The others only served the meal and took a seat again.
If I become them, perhaps I will choose descriptive or narrative because I think it is more effective. And the teacher just order to learners to make a paragraph. If it is narrative, he/she can order them to make one topic and build the paragraph around one main incident, and where does the action take place, and etc. Then order them to use a signal words and phrases.
I think with this activity, the students can develop their skill in writing. That’s all my comment. Thanks..
My name is Sigit, I want to respond about teaching writing, I agree that in teaching writing we can give the students the vocabularies are predicted that the students don’t know or difficult, So in their study they can improve their knowledge about the meaning of these vocabularies and how to use it. Moreover, in teaching writing, I think we can use pictures or games to interest the student’s attention. In addition, the difficulties of students in writing are to make the sentences grammatically. Because we know that their ability in using grammar are difference. So, as a teacher we also have to teach structure in teaching writing.

I agree with pupun’s (VIB) comment that teaching writing is not easy because beside we have to make the students interested in writing, we also have to prepare some material that can increase their ability in writing. I still remember when I was Senior high school, my teacher ask me to write some perception or paragraph that related to the topic. Maybe for the first time, I felt enthusiasm to write but after the teacher ask me then to make the paragraph with different topic, I felt so bored. I didn’t have desire to write because beside my vocabulary was still less, I also felt bored with the same material that didn’t creative enough.
There many activities that we can choose especially from Mrs. Atti’s blog to make teaching writing more fun for the students. It’s very useful for the teacher because those can change the students’ perception slowly that writing is boring lesson.

Today I want to try to give comments for Dewi Kartika Adriyanti class B. It’s really true that there are differences between Indonesian sentence structure and English sentence structure. The students also have difficulties in translate their own words into English because most of them always translate words by words and they only concentrate it without pay attention to their structure in writing. Based from Dewi’s suggestion, to solve the student’s difficulties in writing, we can give them some text, article, or something that can proof their ability in writing. We can start from the simple things that can make them embittered, and then it can create some opinion from their own words based on the text, article, etc that finally can be written well from them in writing process.

I think the main problem in writing is vocabulary and grammar. Rodhi was true that it’s really hard to combine vocabulary and grammar in writing process because besides those problems, we also have to think about how to make good sentences in English written. To make writing easier, I think we can make some strategies such as give the students an interesting note that so familiar for them. Then the students can continue their own words based on the note that had given. It can give them more inspiration in writing because they write some paragraph or something that they know before.

I want to give a comment about the last performance of teaching writing.i think the performance of the last group was like teaching speaking because in the end of teaching, they asked students to retell the recipe.Then, they didn't explore and improve the students' writing skill, because they didn't ask students to write another recipe but only copy the recipe given.
i agree with other comments that teaching writing is not easy, because some of students including me think that writing lesson is boring. some of the time the writing teacher don't use the interesting ways to teach, they only asked students to write based on the material that they had without using the interesting teaching aids. now the challenging for us as a teacher wanna be is how to make writing lesson be the interesting lesson for our students .

Besides that, writing also difficult and sometimes confusing. Maybe to make you interested in writing, you may practice it by choosing the interesting topic. For example try to make a story about the unmemorable event in your life. After that you ask your friend to correct all the sentence structure on that story. Or you may learn writing by using comic pictures, you may create the story according to the pictures. So it will help you to interest in writing.

In my opinion Writing is very important especially for the application and business letter and the teacher should explain about it to the students because it is very needed when we look for job. I think it is little bit impossible for someone to get a job and receive in a company if the person can’t make a good application letter because the staff of the company will be doubtful that the person is able to improve the company. On the last semester, I have ever seen a Writing handbook that one of the chapters examines about application letter. I thought the teacher would explain how to make a good application letter but I was wrong. She didn’t give me the explanation about it at all. She just explained about phrase, sentences and etc. Actually I felt so disappointed because I was very embittered about it.

i think first, the students makes stories that match with their experience or their like..
Then, how about the standardization to evaluate the students' ability in writing?

I want to give a comment.I agrre with popon's comment about teaching writing is difficult because isn't easy to invite the students to write an interesting topic.because they feel bored.i think we as teacher must prepare the material well and give the students interesting games.

I want to comment about teaching writing.
I think teaching writing is very interesting, because when we teach about writing we can also study how to make a good paragraph and also how to develop a paragraph. When the teachers teach about writing, the teachers ask the student to practice so that it can to be habit for them. If we want to be a good teacher especially in writing, the teacher must be creative and then the teachers ask the students to write their experience, like holiday, about the study, her friends, etc, so the students not bore with this lesson.

good night mam...! now I just want to comment about sila's statement that is make out line before writing is very important because it can help to make good paragraph because with make out line or text before writing or make paragraph can organized with well..I agree with silas's statement because I feel it too. When I studied writing IV or V I learn about out line before make a paragraph, it can help us to make good paragraph because we can organize which one part that we would like to write first. I have a plan if I be a teacher then I would like to give that material for my student so that my student can be a goog writer. that's all...

i want to try answer sila's question How the way to interest students to learn about writing? and also sometime the students bored the study writing and how to motivation their to learn about writing? in my opinion, as a good teacher, the teacher are able to invite the students to study about writing. we can try to explain the important of writing, then we can ask the students to write their experience or write paragraph that they want. sometimes the students bore with this lesson, so that as a teacher, we must be creative, not only write..write..and write. maybe we can give a game for the students, like ask the students to imagine something. then choose one student to describe something, then the other students to guest what the picture is? and if the students can answer your question, as a teacher you don't be stingy to give "pujian" to the students who can answer your question.

I want to comment Winda's comment about teaching writing. I agree with her because I also think that teaching writing needs creativity. the teacher has to be creative in developing the material because as we know, for the student, writing is hard to do because they have to imagine something before writing something. So the teacher has to be able to create the teaching-learning situation in the class more imaginative and also cheerful so that the student will be easily imagine something that they want. if they are able to imagine something, automatically there is a material that is ready to write in their mind. I think that's a great question. I just want to give you some suggestions that I know. First, you have to have a small note book. More colorful more good. Then, you have to have colorful pen. after that, you can write anything that happens in your dialy activity. iit can be every one hour, two hour, or a time a day.Then, you can re-read your writing a week after you start to write. You will see tour great written. Try this, hopefully you will be interest in writing.

I want to give a comment to Sila's comment. She said making an outline is a good idea before we write a paragraph. I absolutely agree with her because to make an outline will make the writing process easier, especially if they make an outline with their own imagination. For example they draw their outline with colorful pen and line, then they add some pictures there, automatically it will increase their imagination. they will have lots of words in their minds that they will write on the paper. that's all my comment. Thank you.

writing is the activity of putting something in written form. From the definition above I just want to suggest that when we would like to make some paragraph we can write anything in our mine by making note. After we have finished in making not then we can arrange our note become note well. After that we can developed our note to become a good paragraph...that's all...

I think teaching writing is difficult subject because it is not easy to encourage students in writing subject. I guess that's why most of the presenters couldn't think of any interesting ways of teaching writing...and the students didn't help either because most of them think that writing is just about writing...But after that lesson I learnt that teaching writing could be fun and that there are many ways in teaching writing.
