Here’s the note from the fourth meeting:
When a teacher present structure, it is important to:
• show what the structure means and how it is used by giving examples
• show clearly how the structure is formed, so that the students can use it to make sentences of their own
• show meaning directly, using things the students can see
• show meaning through a situation, in which the structure could naturally be used. The situation can be real or imaginary
This is how different teachers presented comparison of adjectives to their students.
A: I talked about two buildings in the town (the post office is bigger than the bank)
B: I called a tall and a short student to the front and compared them (Anna is taller than Maria)
C: I drew lines on the board
D: I drew pictures of two men on the board and compared them (Andy is taller than Sam)

• Drawing lines on the board is very simple and clear, but not very interesting.
• Comparing two students would be interesting,
but it could be very embarrassing for the them; drawing two imaginary people on the board would be safer and just as clear.

Good evening Bu'Atti. I realized that structure is important part in writing process,especially when we write paper but sometimes we don't use it correctly in our daily conversation. So,that was one reason why people said that structure is hard to understand because they don't master it well. How to teach their students if they don't master it? to tell the truth, I confused to use it oraly although i little bit understood about it. perhaps, after i learnt the methode how to teach structure in your class,I can teach my students better.

When I was in Senior high School, I didn't really understand about structure because my teacher didn't give me clearly explanation about structure and I always got bad score. but when I have studied at Pakuan University, I like structure because my lecturer taught and explained structure clearly enough. After you gave me the material how to teach structure, I can know that structure can be taught by interesting ways so that it can make our students are not bored. I think structure is the most interesting course in English Department, it is like something new for me because I never paid attention about it when I was SMP and SMA because I did not like English at all. But, when I studied it at semester 1 to 5, I always had some different spirits then when I studied the others course. I do not know why actually. but it did not happen in Speaking, using English in daily conversation is really hard to me, maybe it's because of my unhappy childhood. when I was a kid, I was an introvert, hardly ever speaking or sharing, just playing with my dumb toys. communicating with someone new was hard to me, especially speaking in front of my classmate although I had been together with them for times.
Anyway, teaching Structure with your methods are brilliant ideas, the teacher has to be creative to teaching structure by using media or making comparison between the material and and thing. those inspire me to do the same one day when I teach.

I like Structure, moreover it is taught through the Game. It is more interesting and the students are more active than just explaining what Simple Past Tense is.

Hi,Mrs. Atti? I hope you are doing great. I would just like to comment a little bit on 'teaching structure'. I agree with the others that structure is not as easy as it seems, especially teaching structure. I mean, my friends often ask me about structure and I often have difficulty in explaining it, especially when it comes to tenses. Well, maybe not the present simple, present cont., or past simple cuz those are probably the most basic and easy tenses. But still, we find students who uses the tenses wrongly. Maybe this is due to teachers or lecturers who still teach structure just by sitting down and explaining it while students just listen. As a result, students only understand only at that time when the tenses are used, or sometimes, teachers focuses more on the pattern rather than the function of it, so this causes the students to become confused. So I really agree with you that teaching structure could really use the visual aids or even show the use of the structure through situations. Atleast, through situations, students could have a picture in their head of when to use the tenses or other structures. Well, I think teaching structure is more fun and challenging.

Assalamualaikum mam, I think mastering structure is important for us, especially for English Department's students like me. If we don't understand about the structure of English, I think we will get a lot of difficulties to face our study in English department. But the problem is we usually judge study structure is very difficult and boring. According to my experiences since I had been in senior high school, there is no teacher who teach structure with a fun way. Most of them teach structure in a common way like write down the material in the white board, explain it and finished by giving some exercises to the students. I think the students are interest when they are put in the real situation and practice the structure in the real situation such a role play. thanks

Today I want to give a comment for evi Aprianti(6C). She said that structure is very difficult. I also have the same perception about this so I think we must be creative to find the way to make learning structure is fun for our self and also for our students then. Based from evi’s questions, Mrs. Atti have said that we can use anything in our class as an object. Evi can create her way to teach with using an object around her class. We don’t have to give the students the pattern of structure because it can make the students confused with the pattern. We can give the pattern after we have given them the examples through an object around the class. So, they can remember the pattern through fun activities that had been done by them before. If the students feel interested with our way in teaching, I think it also made them pay attention to us during teaching learning process. We just have to improve our self to make another way in teaching structure then finally make the students can accept it well.

Honestly, structure is one of difficult lesson I want to share with you about my experience.when my teacher explained to me about relative pronoun for example, directly i understood but when i made a sentence by my self i become confused. I realize that i must study hard to make the right sentence.So, when i will teach structure to my student later, i will remember what the important thing from your explanation and use the communicative way.Such as: show the structure means and how it is used by giving example, show clearly how the structure is formed.I know that it's not will be easy but i will and have to try it one day.

Structure forced the teachers to give the students the material that they have to learn hardly and remember those the material. Teacher of English know that some structure are easier to teach than others. There is the question of how to make the students enjoy in learning structure rather than trying to teach them in a formal way and how to make them to be better to do the task and they feel positive about the material. Almost the students complain that learning structure is not easy and the way of teaching is make them feel bored.

i want to give a comment for the first group who taught structure.
actually, the way of their teaching was good. but, there are many of games. so, students just little bit grasped the materials. i knew that they tied to give the materials through the games. but, at that time we were junior/Senior High School. and the way was not suitable to apply in Junior/Senior High School. based on Quantum Learning book, actually learning through the game is good and can be applied but it's for a while...not during the whole time. games are given just for fun to disappear the bored of the students.

Dear Mrs. Atti... I would like to comment on teaching structure again. It’s okay right? Well, most of the students say that learning structure sucks because they have to memorize many rules or tenses. It usually confuses the students. Well, my advice to my friends who will teach structure one day is that when you teach structure, don’t just ask them to memorize the pattern of the tenses, give them two examples of the tenses and asking them to do the exercise. But ask them to practice the tenses everyday. Tell them that there are many ways to practice structure. Memorizing is not the one and only way to know tenses. They could practice the tenses by writing sentences using that sentence, write a paragraph, by imagining a situation where you usually use the tense and saying it out loud (like a role-play but by yourself), making conversation with friends using the tenses, or analyzing sentences from a text that uses the tenses being taught. Tell them that they don’t have to be embarrassed when they practice and not to be afraid to make mistakes. Try to make them feel good about learning structure...well, I guess that’s my advice about teaching structure.

Some comments in this blog say that they couldn’t obtain the Structure materials when they were in SMP or SMA because the teachers didn’t explain the materials clearly. I think we have to learn from our experience, if we feel that our teachers’ teaching methods were not good, so now it’s our job to change it. Let’s be creative and innovative. Mrs. Atti had given us what a good teaching Structure method with giving the example that can be looked by students. Although I do not know yet further about the best teaching structure method, but I think it’s obviously helpful.

Hi mom… I’m Iyan from class A, I agree with the method, which was written, on the blogg. According to my experience, that many ways of teaching structure, such as PPP, EGRA, TPR, etc. But I think Santo’s group did not master the technique how to teach structure.
Teaching structure by drawing lines on the board is more simple but it is not interesting, I think the students bored with this method because they only presented and practice. If they give any game in this presentation probably will be more interesting and make them enjoy. I think that’s all my comment. Thanks

I think teaching structure is not only difficult but very bored subject. We must prepare the material well. It is impossible for students especially for English Faculty to graduate from University if they still have so much structure mistaken in making a paper. I want to comment about teaching structure. I think "Teaching Structure" is quite hard to do because structure is a horrible lesson for the students. So, the teacher should make a more interesting way or technique so that the students will be more understand about the lesson. For example the teacher explain the material in picture like for preposition: there is a picture that shows a person in a cartoon or caricature, and on the picture we can see that person walk in the building, on the building or at the building. So, with that picture,I think the students will be more understand about preposition.

I would like to respond Enny’s comment. I agree with her that structure is difficult. In my opinion each person has different ability. Someone who good in structure is not guarantee her to be good in speaking. I have a friend who always gets good mark in structure but she can’t speak English well. She often confused about what she should say. And when she speaks English orally sometime her structure sentences is not good as written. Actually I don’t know what is the reason of that, maybe because of her nervousness or there are other factors which can influence to speak correctly by using good structure.

I would like to respond Andhita’s comment. She asked how to remember the structure’s pattern. Actually remember all the structure’s pattern is not easy job to do. I suggest you to make note of each pattern and after that you may try to make example according to the pattern with your own words. And you may put it in your room so you can look it up while remember the pattern.

I would like to respond Siti Mutia’s comment. Actually I have the same experience with her that my teacher didn’t teach structure specifically when I was in school. Maybe because they taught English in general. So they tend to taught English with reading material according to the text book. I learnt structure actually, but not all sentence structure she taught specifically to their students. If you asked when is structure introduced to the student for first time?in elementary school? In Junior high school? or in Senior High School?. I think the answer is at the first time they learn English. Because its better if the students know sentence structure as soon as possible when they start to learn English.

Until now, we have learning many structures, likes simple past tense, simple present tense, present continous tense, and etc. We were learning structure 1 until structure 5. The lecture was explained about it. However, mom until now, I still confuse if I must to answer the questions fill in the blank of the paragraph. In the paragraph, we must understand of the story and when the answer must coherence with sentence, and the most important we must know, what the tense we can use in the sentence to be the right sentence and the right tense too. So, I sill confuse if I must choose the tenses.
Maybe, in this time I just to take charge like simple past tense, simple present tense, and present continous tense, only the base of tenses. And like present future perfect continous tense, past future perfect tense, and etc I still confuse to use it. But, mom if I always try and study hard, and always used the tenses in writing or answer do the exercise. Maybe I can use it easily in the sentence and more clearly how to make sentence and use the tenses when conversation the times order.
